The Problem Isn't Too Many Photos—It's Too Many Places They're Stored

July 06, 20264 min read

Have you ever tried to find one specific photo…and had absolutely no idea where to look?

Was it on your phone?

Your old laptop?

Facebook?

Google Photos?

A flash drive?

That external hard drive in the desk drawer?

Or maybe it's still sitting on a CD from 2007.

Most people tell me they have "way too many photos." But after working with hundreds of clients over the years, I've realized that's usually not the real problem.

The real problem is that our memories are scattered.

Today's families don't just have printed photo albums anymore. We have pictures and videos stored on phones, tablets, computers, cloud services, social media, flash drives, external hard drives, DVDs, CDs, and even old cameras we haven't turned on in years. Every new device or app becomes one more place our memories can end up.

When your memories are spread across a dozen different locations, it's hard to enjoy them. You may worry about losing them, wonder whether they're backed up, or simply give up trying to find that one photo you wanted to show someone.

That's exhausting, and it's more common than you might think.

The good news is that you don't have to organize everything all at once.

Progress really does happen one step at a time.

Start by taking inventory.

Grab a piece of paper and take a few minutes to thoughtfully list every place you believe your photos and videos might be stored. Think beyond just your current phone or computer. Include physical locations like boxes in the closet or basement, as well as older devices such as retired laptops, external hard drives, camera memory cards, and previous phones you may still have tucked away.

Don’t forget about digital spaces too, such as social media accounts, cloud storage services, email attachments, and any apps you’ve used over the years to store or share photos.

As you go through this exercise, try to be as thorough as possible. Even jotting down places you're unsure about can be helpful. This simple step often brings clarity and helps you see the full picture of where your memories are scattered.

You might be surprised by just how long your list becomes—and that awareness is the first step toward bringing everything together.

Choose one permanent home.

Instead of wondering where everything belongs, decide where you ultimately want all of your memories to live. Having one central location makes organizing much simpler and gives you confidence that your memories are safe.

For many families, this might mean choosing a trusted, permanent storage solution like FOREVER Storage®, where your photos and videos are protected for the long term and easy to access whenever you want them. The key is choosing a place you feel confident in, one that gives you peace of mind and makes it easier to keep everything together moving forward.

Once you've chosen your permanent home, begin moving your memories there. You don’t need to have everything perfectly organized first; in fact, waiting for perfection often delays progress. It’s much easier to organize once everything is in one place than when your photos and videos are scattered across multiple locations.

Don't forget your videos.

Many of us think about photos first, but videos are often even more scattered. Home movies, phone videos, VHS tapes, and other outdated media, and clips shared through social media, all tell important parts of your family's story.

Videos capture voices, movement, and moments in a way photos can't, and they deserve a safe, organized home too.

Keep it simple and keep going.

You don’t need a perfect system to get started. You just need a plan and a place to begin.

Focus first on getting everything into one safe, permanent home.

You don't have to organize it all right away.

The most important step is making sure your photos and videos are protected and no longer scattered across multiple devices and platforms.

Once everything is in one place, you can take your time organizing in a way that works for you.

The goal is knowing where your memories are, knowing they're protected, and being able to enjoy them whenever you want.

Because memories shouldn't be scattered across a dozen devices.

They should be easy to find, easy to share, and preserved for the generations who come after us.

If you're not sure where to start, I'd love to help. Sometimes a 30-minute conversation is all it takes to create a plan that fits your situation. Whether you have thousands of digital photos, boxes of old media waiting to be digitized, or memories scattered across multiple devices, we can figure out your next step together—one box, one album, and one story at a time.
