You know that feeling…
You know you have the photo.
You can picture it in your mind.
But when you go to find it?
It’s not on your phone.
Not on your computer.
Not in the folder you thought it was in.
So you start checking everywhere, and before you know it, 20 minutes have gone by.
Sound familiar?
The problem usually isn’t that you don’t have your photos…
It’s that they’re everywhere.
Most people I talk to have photos in at least 4–5 different places:
their phone
an old computer
a current computer
random cloud accounts
USB drives or external hard drives
boxes of printed photos
And honestly, that’s normal.
But when your photos are spread out like that, a few things happen:
It’s hard to find what you need (no clear photo organization system)
You end up with duplicates (photo decluttering gets harder)
You don’t use your photos for anything (no memory keeping workflow)
And some of them are at risk of being lost (no real photo backup)
Organization helps…
But only if everything is in the same place.
Instead of thinking about all the places your photos are now, it helps to think about what you actually need from your photo storage:
✔️ Safe – protected from loss, damage, or outdated technology (long-term photo storage)
✔️ Organized – easy to sort, group, and find (digital photo organization)
✔️ Accessible – you can get to them when you want to use them (easy photo access)
If a system doesn’t check all three of those boxes, it's probably going to cause frustration later.
A lot of the places we naturally store photos are convenient… but incomplete.
Phones are great for capturing photos, but not for long-term storage or organization.
Computers and external drives feel secure, but they can crash, get lost, or become outdated (not reliable photo backup solutions).
Free cloud accounts seem like a good solution, but photos often end up scattered across multiple accounts and tied to ongoing subscriptions (cloud storage confusion).
None of these are bad… they’re just not meant to be your main home.
Instead of trying to organize photos in lots of different places, it works so much better to choose:
👉 One main home for your photos
A place where:
Everything eventually gets stored (central photo storage)
Everything can be organized (organized photo library)
Everything can be found (searchable photos)
That becomes your go-to location—your starting point anytime you want to look for, share, or use your photos.
(For my clients and me, that usually ends up being their FOREVER Storage® account because it’s permanent storage, organized, and easy to access, but the key idea is having one consistent home.)
You don’t have to fix everything all at once.
Start simple:
Pick your “main home” (your photo storage solution)
Choose one source to start with
(your phone, one box, or one year)
Begin moving photos into that one place (consolidate photos)
Don’t worry about making it perfect yet.
Just focus on bringing things together.
The goal isn’t perfectly organized photos.
It’s being able to say:
👉 “I know exactly where to go when I want to find a photo.”
That’s what makes your photos usable, shareable, and part of your family memories again.
If you’re not sure what the best setup looks like for your situation, I’m happy to help you figure out a simple photo organization plan that fits your life. 💙
